stories told and songs sung

Life is full of stories and songs. By sharing them, maybe we see a little more clearly how we are all connected.

Location: Deep South

I grew up in Texas and then went off to college in Tennessee. There I met my future wife in a great story you'll have to hear someday. Med school was back in Texas. We got married during my 2nd year. An oldie but a goodie

I'm playing my violin for offertory at church this week, and I thought of one of my favorite old hymns, "My Jesus, I Love Thee." Then I remembered one of my favorite renditions of it by a group that has touched my soul in so many ways: Avalon. I found a youtube video of them doing it live, which is all the more impressive. The post date says 2007, but I know that the recording is from much earlier than that. Anyway, an oldie but a goodie - if you appreciate tight harmonies and powerful vocals, you should check it out.

The Importance of Counseling

I teach medical students all the time that the most important thing you can do is to explain things clearly to your patients. This story illustrates that point all too clearly.

A patient with severe constipation came back to clinic complaining that he was still constipated.
"Doc," he said, "those suppositories you gave me aren't working at all. I'm still totally stopped up, and it is becoming very uncomfortable. Plus, they taste terrible."
"Wait, are you taking those orally?"
"Of course I am. What do you think I'd be doing, sticking them up my butt?"
